ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The federal cabinet has approved a new local government system for Islamabad, under which the federal capital will be divided into three councils.
Under the approved system, each council will have its own mayor and will comprise 21 members.
Women and minorities will also be given representation in the general councils, aimed at ensuring the participation of different segments of society in Islamabad’s local government system.
The Islamabad Local Government Bill will be presented before the National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior on Thursday for consideration and approval.
Following approval by the committee, the bill will be tabled before both the Senate and the National Assembly for passage.

The proposed system is intended to establish a new framework for local governance in the federal capital, with elected councils responsible for municipal and local-level affairs.
Earlier, heavy rainfall triggered urban flooding in parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Tuesday, inundating several residential areas and forcing authorities to close educational institutions in Rawalpindi for the day.
Several neighbourhoods near Pirwadhai, including Safdarabad, Gali Loharan and Fauji Colony, were flooded after torrential rain, with water entering houses and shops.
Areas falling under Union Councils 4 and 5 were also affected, while vehicles were submerged in Awan Colony.
Raja Bazaar, one of Rawalpindi’s major commercial areas, was also inundated as rainwater accumulated across the city.
The water level in Nullah Lai continued to rise following the heavy downpour, prompting authorities to issue an evacuation alert for residents living in vulnerable areas along the watercourse.
