Summary PTA has decided to block WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive or cancelled SIMs and advised users to connect their accounts with active mobile numbers.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to block WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive, cancelled or no-longer-used SIM cards, warning users to ensure their accounts are connected to active mobile numbers.
According to the PTA, some WhatsApp accounts associated with inactive mobile numbers are being used for fraud and other unlawful activities. The authority said action against such accounts could begin at any time.
The PTA has advised users to ensure that their WhatsApp accounts remain linked to active and currently used mobile numbers. Users who have changed their mobile numbers have also been directed to immediately use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature to update their accounts.
The authority said timely updating of mobile numbers would help users maintain control over their WhatsApp accounts and reduce the risk of misuse. Users have also been advised to verify the current status of their SIMs and take necessary action if their numbers have become inactive or cancelled.
The PTA had previously warned that WhatsApp accounts connected to blocked, cancelled, inactive or unregistered SIMs could become inaccessible, urging users to keep their accounts linked to active and properly registered SIMs.
The regulator said the measure is aimed at addressing the misuse of mobile numbers and strengthening digital security. Since inactive numbers may eventually be reissued to other subscribers, accounts still associated with such numbers can pose security and fraud risks.
Users have therefore been advised to take timely steps to update their WhatsApp numbers and ensure that their SIMs remain active and properly verified.
